this is kpix5 news on the cw. bay area paramedics grieving for a colleague. for a second time after a mystery shooting turns into murder. >> vacation interrupted. the offduty bay area police officer saved the day at airport security. and left in the trash and forgotten. the lucky litter of puppies rescued in the nick of time. i'm allen martin in for ken bastida. >> quinn has died two dais after someone shot him while he was driving in the oakland hills. as night, the search is on for the killers and his motive. kpix5's kristen ayers is at the crime scene. kristen. >> reporter: that's right, bower was a dublin resident. authorities announced today that he died around 4:00 today.

tonight here at the scene, people are leaving behind flowers at the very spot where his car plunged down a ravine moments after he was shot. black ribbon tied outside the santa clara ambulance station, along with flowers and stuffed animals. >> he was a great guy. he was an amazing paramedic. >> black bands over badges. all in tribute to santa clara county paramedic, quinn bower. bower was offduty visiting his father in the oakland hills tuesday when someone opened fire on his in his blue honda civic. quinn stepped on the gas and the car crashed. >> not only our company, but our community and the ems community as a whole. >> the shooting happened almost two years to the day that another paramedic at the same station, brian stowe, was left severely brain damaged after being beaten at a giants dodgers game. >> people are still dealing

with that horrible, tragic accident. for this to happen on top of it, it's just horrific. >> more horrific because there are so few answers. police are not saying whether the crime was random or bower was targeted as part of a robbery. bower's coworkers say all they can do is keep working, keep helping. >> it is hard to believe. some people, it has not clicked. we are in that shock mode. >> authorities investigating this is a homicide, but releasing very little information. they are not giving us any description about the suspect. back to you. >> kristen, such a tragedy. these people are committed to helping others and saving other people's lives and this family, really, paramedics had two major tragedies in the last few years. >> it's very tough. it's strange for them to be in

the situation where they deal with something they love. when it's personal, you have to imagine it's a lot tougher. >> absolutely. kristen, thank you. you can plows call the oakland police if you know anything about the shooting. there is a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. well, oakland cops are doing damage control. officers investigating an armed robbery at a downtown restaurant ended up opening fire and wounding a teenage boy. a chef told police that she was walking to her car after her shift last night when three guys rode up on bicycles, grabbed her bag and knocked her out. whether officers got there, a witness fingered a group of teenagers who was hanging out nearby. they went up to those teenagers and not long after that, a shot rang out. >> according to the officer's statement, he received a threat from one of the individuals and fired a single round at his

direction. >> the police chief isn't saying what that threat was. the bullet grazed the teenager use jaw. he's going to be okay. the victim told police the teenagers had nothing to do with the robbery. a vacation ended earlier than expected. he was headed to airport security when another traveler stepped out of line. way out of line. kpix5 shows us what happened next. >> offduty police corporal waits in line at the airport check point with his shoes off when this scene on the left of the screen unfolds. a woman knocks over a sign leading to the way and attacks a woman's security officer as he tries to stop her. rogers doesn't see anyone help, so he goes over a short wall and tackles the wall. he says he's a police officer and they hand him the handcuffs

to make the arrest. the video is the talk of the police department. >> i thought typical justin. he's always on duty and couldn't be prouder of him. he's always a cop. and he definitely did the right thing. >> rogers is a seven-year veteran of the force. he is the son of a retired police sergeant. when he nailed the honolulu suspect, rogers and his family were traveling back to the bay area from a vacation. after he gave police a statement, they boarded their plane on time. the tsa thanked rogers and the police department. psa joins the citizens of penole in saluting your heroic actions. >> police commander said he is not surprised at roger's actions. he says he did what is expected. he took decisive action and

acted appropriately. he is expected back on the job on monday. now do we know why that woman attacked a tsa agent? >> the tsa doesn't say, but they did say that she is charged with assault. >> hope everything at the wedding goes okay. >> yeah, watch out. >> prosecutors say that the driver who plowed into a san jose wal-mart on easter sunday definitely meant to do it because he has done it before. 33-year-old hamid was arraigned today on a list of charges, including attempted murder. witnesses say that he revved his engine before barreling into the store and started beating people with a metal club. he was also charged today in a december drive through at san jose convenience store. two workers there barely made it out of the way. the owner was stunned to hear it happened again. >> it confirms for us that this was intentional here.

he was on a mission to do serious damage and potentially serious harm to individuals. >> he is being held without bail and he'll be back in court next week to enter a plea. >> it's bad when you forget to take the trash out on trash day. what's worse, when you do take it out and they don't pick it up. that's what is happening in six bay area cities. a strike means no trash collection in fairfield, pacifica, half-moon bay, union city and fremont. in fremont is where kit doe is right now. kit. >> reporter: these trash cans you see behind me were supposed to get picked up this morning, but it didn't happen. fremont was added to that list of cities today. the bay area is caught in the middle of a labor dispute in what is a sympathy strike. as homeowners wheel their trash back into their homes, it's the latest trash talk. it doesn't look like you have a lot of room. >> we really don't.

we went downsize. we retired, too, so it's a tight squeeze anyway. >> dawn scott and her neighbors are on the brink of a smelly problem. a garbage strike hit fremont. it's going to be a long wait until the next pickup. >> this one is almost full. so i may have one more bag of something i can get in there, but hopefully i can make it one more week. >> workers are republic allied waste went on strike in youngstown, ohio, and ally dump trucks sat quiet as workers stayed home. both here and in cities across the bay area. the teamsters union issued a statement saying for more than a year now, republic has been trying to squeeze every last cent out of its workers by cheating them out of pay, raising their healthcare costs, and cutting their retirement benefits. >> is the city caught in the

killed dozens of people. authorities say workers had in india, a building collapse killed dozens of people. authorities say workers had illegally been adding additional floors to a four story office building north of mumbai when the whole thing collapsed. rescuers still digging through that rubble. so far, 27 are dead. about twice that number injured. and in oklahoma, a natural gas compressioner stadium exploded. everyone within a mile of that plant has been evacuated. no word yet on what caused it. two more states have passed stricter gun laws in the past 24 hours. maryland became the first state in decades to require gun
